Dr. Thomas Dykstra will introduce the concept that insects will not attack a healthy plant and offer examples showing that insects consume poor quality food. He will also describe how to measure a healthy plant by using a refractometer that measures the end products of photosynthesis. The concept of broken vs. complete proteins will be briefly discussed as it relates to insect digestion. Finally, four different levels of plant health will be provided in a chart where I will then superimpose four different insect groups and relate them all to plant health.

In this webinar, Caterina will explore the importance of cover crop use with a special focus on viticulture. Soil surface management is an efficient practice for achieving multiple regenerative goals, such as improving weed management, building soil health, conserving biodiversity, and controlling pests effectively. Even as cover crops generally enhance soil ecosystem services, some disservices can also occur. For example, cover plants may compete with cash crops for soil resources, such as water and nutrients. What strategies must be considered as we focus on soil life? There are no black or white options and no perfect recipe that works for everyone in all contexts. It is a balancing game (worth playing!) and we need to understand the trade-offs and full consequences of any strategies we utilize.
