There is no better way to grow plants and heal our planet than the way that Nature herself has devised. See below how our regenerative methodologies benefit all!
Plants absorb carbon from the atmosphere during photosynthesis and they invest a substantial proportion of this into the soil (~40%) to feed microorganisms. This is the basis of the mechanism that pumps carbon into the world’s soils. It is possible that by regenerating the world’s soils, we may be able to halt climate change.
Recent studies have shown that the world’s insect populations have been declining by around 25% every decade for the last 30 years! Bird populations are also plummeting, and other animals are being affected too. The major causes have been identified as habitat destruction and the use of pesticides.
Typically only about 40% of the inorganic fertilizers, applied in conventional farming, are absorbed by plants. The rest pollutes our air, rivers, lakes and oceans, causing major damage to those ecosystems and to the world’s oceans. With a balanced Soil Food Web in place and the use of regenerative practices, inorganic fertilizers are not required.
The earth’s topsoils are being eroded at an alarming rate. The UN has estimated that we only have 60 years left before they are completely depleted. The Soil Food Web is nature’s way of building the structure that prevents soils from being washed-away by heavy rain or blown away by the wind. Intensive plowing and the use of chemicals destroys this structure, leaving the soil vulnerable to erosion.
Having a healthy, functional soil results in several benefits that farmers are becoming aware of as the Regenerative Ag movement grows. Many of these benefits can be seen in months, rather than years, once the Soil Food Web is restored. That’s the microbial community that drives the soil ecosystem.

You’ll learn all about how soil functions on a biological level in the Soil Food Web Foundation Courses. You’ll learn how to make biological compost and liquid soil amendments and how to apply them to the soil so that the soil biome can be rapidly restored to health. You’ll also learn about the management practices that need to be adopted to protect the soil biome. You’ll get to attend monthly Q&A sessions with Dr. Elaine and her team and you’ll get access to a dedicated forum where you can ask questions. You’ll also study the microscopy technique that Dr. Elaine developed, that will enable you to identify and quantify beneficial microorganism groups in the soil and in your compost. These are all great skills to have at your disposal if you are working on regenerating farmland or on an ecosystem restoration project, as repairing the soil biome will dramatically accelerate the regeneration process, so you can start to see the results in the first growing season.
You’ll also receive complimentary access to the following online programs.
This is where you’ll study ecological principles and ecosystem restoration techniques. You’ll learn about the Earth’s natural cycles and how they can be repaired; the services that ecosystems perform and how they operate; the different phases and stages of ecosystems and the restoration continuum; how species interact with each other; how to restore ecosystems back to full health and functionality; how to increase biodiversity; how to measure the impact of an ecosystem restoration project and much more! This course will prepare you to make a meaningful contribution to any ecosystem restoration community, where people are coming together to restore their landscapes. Please take a look at the “Pathways” video for more information on this. This is a great tool to have in your box if you are a Soil Food Web Consultant, working with farmers to support their transition to regenerative agriculture, because it will empower you to have a positive effect on the wider ecosystem, beyond the soil biome and cropland. You’ll be able to have a positive impact on streams and rivers, on woodland and on the animals that occupy the local area too.
You’ll have 12 months to complete this course online, and we advise students to commit to around 80 hours in total. The course is delivered by Ecologist Paul Morris, who is an expert in the fields of botany, ecosystem restoration and regenerative farming, with over 27 years of experience. Paul is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP) with the Society for Ecological Restoration. His extensive experience in restoration ecology and conservation biology makes him a leader in the design and planting of restoration areas. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with Paul and other members of the training team in monthly student webinars and in the dedicated student forum, where you’ll be able to ask any questions about the course content and get to know some of the other students. This is a great opportunity to network with other people in the community.
This is an intensive, 3-month program designed to help you to master Dr. Elaine’s microscopy technique. You’ll work one-on-one with a Microscopy mentor, in 8 1-hour sessions, to develop your skills with the microscope to the required standard, enabling you to identify and quantify the 4 key groups of beneficial microorganisms that are required to make a soil function. Once you pass the assessment, you’ll be certified as a Soil Food Web Lab-Technician and you’ll then be listed on our website, so the farmers in your region can locate you to get their soils tested. This is such a powerful tool, because it enables you to measure the success of various techniques that you might be experimenting with on your ecosystem restoration project, or farm. You’ll be able to see how the soil biome responds in weeks – way before you start to see above-ground responses to the strategies you are using. And, you’ll be able to assess the quality of your compost and liquid amendments, so you’ll know how impactful they could be, before you put in the effort of applying them to the soil. This is kind of like having x-ray vision that enables you to see what’s happening beneath the surface of the soil. Armed with the microscope, you’ll be able to diagnose imbalances in the soil biome. You’ll also have the knowledge, from the Soil Food Web Foundation Courses, to create inocula that can be used to bring the biome back to a state of health, literally repairing the ecosystem from the ground up!

Due to inflationary pressures, this is the final time we will be able to make the Ecosystem Restoration Bundle available at this price.
Dr. Elaine has used the Soil Food Web Approach to regenerate soils on 6 continents. We now have students in over 80 countries and so far we haven’t found anywhere in the world where the soil ecosystem cannot be restored. (Antarctica is the obvious exception since the soil isn’t accessible there!)
All plants form symbiotic relationships with microorganisms in the soil. That’s because when plants first evolved on the land, around 500 million years ago, the world’s soils were already populated with microbes. So these relationships have been there from the beginning. Our persistent disturbance of the soil, with the plow and more recently with chemicals, has destroyed the balance that existed in the soil ecosystem. Fortunately, we can put that right very rapidly with the Soil Food Web Approach, which is all about harvesting microbes from the local area, multiplying the aerobic microbes using Dr. Elaine’s close-control composting system, and then re-introducing them to the soil. With regenerative agricultural techniques like no till, the soil biome is protected and so repeated treatments may not be necessary.
The short answer is ‘yes.’ Dr. Elaine has worked on large scale projects that cover thousands of acres. She has also worked on some smaller projects too. BioComplete™ Compost and liquid amendments can be produced at large scale, using industrial equipment and also at very small scale, using hand tools and homemade brewing kits. Of course, application at large scale is very different than it would be in someone’s garden, but the good news is that conventional spraying equipment and irrigation systems can be used to deliver BioComplete™ Liquid Amendments to the soil, with some very minor modifications.
Our training programs are designed for people with no scientific or agricultural background. Dr. Elaine has an informal teaching style that makes the lectures easy to follow. You’ll have access to the Student Forum and monthly live Q&A sessions where your questions will be answered.

Students wishing to pursue a career as a Soil Food Web Consultant will need to progress from the Foundation Courses to the Consultant Training Program.
Some become Soil Food Web Consultants who help farmers, ranchers and growers to transition away from using chemicals, to a biological/regenerative farming technique. Others focus on producing great compost, which they then can sell to soil consultants or direct to farmers. And others become Soil Food Web Lab-Technicians who perform biological assessments for farmers and growers, or for Soil Food Web Consultants.
You will need to buy a suitable microscope and microscope camera, as well as some ancillary equipment such as test-tubes and slides, etc. Please take a look at this pdf for more information. You can buy a perfectly adequate microscope and camera for $500-$600.
That depends on you and how much effort you put into attracting new clients. You will need to identify and approach local farmers, growers, and compost producers. We will provide you with information on how to do that and some tips from other Certified Lab-Techs that have been successful.
You’ll get a maximum of 3 months to complete the CLP training program and the Microscopy Proficiency Assessment. During this time you will get 8 hours of 1-on-1 mentoring time.
You’ll need to complete the Foundation Courses (FC) first, but that can be done in just 4 weeks, working full time. We advise students that they need between 120-150 hours to complete the FC, so 4 weeks is plenty of time if you are focused. You’ll have up to 12 months to complete the FC if required.
You’ll get 2 attempts at taking the assessment. If you fail both times, then you will need to book some additional time with your mentor in order to work on whatever is going wrong. Once you have ironed-out the problems, you’ll be able to retake the assessment. Additional fees apply.
Your information, including name, address (optional), email, and phone number, will be featured on this page, once you have been certified as a Soil Food Web Lab-Tech. You can opt-out if you don’t want to be listed.
The short answer is yes. Some Certified Soil Food Web Lab-Techs tell us they charge between $120 and $150 per sample, but there are no restrictions. Remember it will take you about an hour to complete the assessment and the report.
We do receive inquiries from farmers, growers and compost producers who want to have an analysis performed. Some just go straight to the website and find a lab-tech by themselves. We make recommendations based on proximity, so if someone in your region contacts us, we’d recommend them to you.
That’s not a problem. This program is designed for beginners.
